– Who We Are –
Inaugurated in November 2009, the VIDYA School in Gurgaon, Haryana, on the outskirts of Delhi NCR, is a state-of-the-art English medium CBSE school for underprivileged children. It houses advanced classrooms, excellent sports facilities, a large library, robotics, science and language labs, and life skills and cultural programs. The quality of our education and facilities are on par with some of the best public schools in the city. The vision is for the school to provide 1000+ less-privileged children with a high-quality education, and the best infrastructure and facilities. We aim to make them well-equipped to utilize the opportunities of India’s emerging economy, second-to-none in their ability to compete, excel, and lead India into the future.
-What We Do-
VIDYA with its remarkable journey of 35 years is a registered not-for-profit organization working for the education, empowerment, and transformation of less privileged children, youth and women through micro-level intervention. VIDYA was founded in 1985 by Rashmi Misra, who taught a class of five girls at her home on the campus of IIT Delhi, which turned out to be the start of a movement. In the past three decades, VIDYA has impacted over 4,50,000 people with a presence in 5 metropolitan cities (Delhi, Gurgaon, Bangalore, Mumbai & Pune) and 78 successful projects across the country. Our nationally recognized grass-root level programs include schools, beyond-school education, distance learning, computer training, youth management, adult literacy, skills training, and social entrepreneurship for the less privileged.
We strive every day to provide high-quality education, empowerment, opportunities, and second chances to children, youth, and women. Our work enables individuals to dream big, achieve their goals and create the social change they want to see in the world. Ensuring employability and building capacity is the VIDYA ethos. The VIDYA School (www.vidyaschool.com) at Gurugram is a K 12 CBSE School for underserved students in Gurugram. This is our flagship project established in 2009 and is now ranked amongst the best schools in the NCR with well-equipped laboratories for the English language, Khan Academy programs, and Robotics. In 2015, the school was awarded the British Council International School Award for having an excellent curriculum with a global dimension. The school was awarded the BrainFeed Award for Excellence in 2017 and 2022 for overall school development. The school has a tradition of students being selected as MENSA scholars and in 2022, 44 students have been included under the Mensa Project Dhruv. Co-curricular activities in school provide ample opportunities for the students to explore their interests in Indian performing arts and crafts, sports/athletics, and oratory skills and the school has received several awards in State level competitions. Participation by the students in the Model United Nations program has helped them develop confidence, social skills, and an understanding of global issues.
Since 2017, our students have done well in their 12th exams and some are pursuing further education in professional colleges. But we recognize that every student will not have the ability to make it through the common entrance exams and it would be extremely meaningful for them to have employable skills when they graduate. They would be role models in their community and this would help us enroll more students, especially for NIOS. We also want to focus on imparting skills and necessary support which will help the students in achieving sustainable earning options. A career development desk and a start-up incubator have been identified as viable options which will help the above-stated purpose. Engaging the minds of the students at an early stage and inculcating a spirit of entrepreneurship would help them understand the start-up culture that is now so prevalent in India and is the way forward for this generation of bright and innovative students.
With this objective in mind, we are embarking on a project to upgrade the existing infrastructure in our school and create an Incubation Laboratory/ Centre for Innovation as well as additional classrooms, a Robotics laboratory, and a library to enable students/ex-students to stay back after school and do their projects/exam preparations. The additional infrastructure has been designed by a professional firm of architects and their design specifications are focusing on the usage of lightweight prefabricated structures manufactured by Tata Bluescope Private Ltd. The total cost of the entire floor is estimated at about INR 4,00,00,000 (INR 2,00,00,000 towards construction and INR 2,00,00,000 for furnishing the facilities).
We have attached herewith a proposal outlining the infrastructure requirements and also the funds that need to be raised. It is named after Ajay Relan, who was our great supporter and friend who passed away, untimely a few months ago. Donations of any amount would be of tremendous support and we will provide naming opportunities too. Donations to VIDYA are exempt under the Income Tax Act, 1961. Please see the attached details.
